Social, Environmental and Spiritual Health post

Introduction

“What disgusting clothes you’re wearing kid, cant you put something else nicer, it is something horrendous for my eyes” says the 18 year old teen Thomas, while the freshman Robert ran away as he was humiliated by a group of bullies at school. “Yeah and don’t even come back you loser!” shouts Thomas once more.
Being bullied, mistreated, humiliated and any other adjective there is for this is a terrible and awful thing that no one should experience. That’s not the case though, because many kids all around the world are suffering from this and it is still a concern that causes physical, emotional and psychological damage. This post is about social health, about the quality of relationships one has, about environmental health, taking care of nature and the resources of the world, and spiritual health, having a sense of purpose in life. These are the three last elements that make up the term of health, and it will be analyzed again with all the main mistakes we make and some advices.
The specialist who has helped me with the main arguments of this post is Felix Bombarolo, an Argentinean sociologist who works with teenager and whose opinion will be shared around the social health part of this post.

Social health

This component is all about the quality of relationships with friends, family, teachers, and others one is in contact with. One should respect other the way they are, avoid people who are intolerant to one, like bullies. A healthy person in this area knows how to handle problems with people by assertively talking without the need of fights. He/ she also has supportive relationships in which he/she trusts and can express her feelings freely.

Avoid bullying! Don´t make this mistake!  Source: Corbis
·      Bullying, respecting others and expressing needs- As we have seen, this something that at our stage we must learn not to do. At our school there might be people from different nationalities, races, cultures and different opinions, and in this diverse world there shouldn’t be any mistreating to people that whom we may not like or disagree. Bullies are unhealthy in this component, their relationship with other people is horrible, since all they do is fight and treat everyone in a bad way. For those  who think that bullying will make them popular and friends with everyone, sorry to break it to you but that is the opposite. By doing this you simply show others that you are insecure as a being, and need to release you’re anger, suffering and whatever feeling you may have about yourself. If you feel like you have maybe mistreated somebody, go and apologize to him and solve every possible conflict there are in between you two. It won’t only make you a better person on the interior but it will also make the other person as well, and maybe save something that could have ended worse in the future, like a suicide (called bullicide). Something we may say to a peer might greatly affect their life, even change it drastically, a simply “ you suck at everything dude” by accident might make the person go into a psychological break down, and their character might completely change. Our words are a massive tool, both for good and bad, and when used negatively to criticize somebody it deeply affects one. So think before speaking cause you might be changing an innocent guy’s life. There are different ways a bully can act over his victim, such as physically (hitting, kicking, punching, etc), verbally (name calling, insulting, sexist, etc.), indirect (spreading nasty stories about someone, excluding someone) and cyber bulling (text message, e-mail bullying, via social networks, etc.)  If the bully keeps bullying you, and you know he won’t change, then it is all up to you for them to stop it. Go and tell your parents, teachers, friends, directors, anyone in order to stop this. You must express your needs, that is the only way we will know how you feel! Don’t think about the “what will they think if I go and tell the teacher what my problem is”. Just do it, your health is in play and it is something that must be done. You will be thought as courageous and will help others from getting bullied as well!

Types of communication! It will really make a difference on our lifestyle.
·      Assertively talking to solve problems- This is also something mentioned in the others components, but will be re-mentioned because it is worth learning this skill because even though it may help you in the instance, your relationship and the way people look at you will suffer. Let’s say your waiting in line for the school lunch, and suddenly one stranger cuts in front of you. What will you do?? Three options: you can either go to him and get into a fight and argue for why he/ she cut the whole line (aggressive), you can stay there and not do anything (passive) or go and express your needs in a calm way without arguing and the needs of shouting (assertive). As you already predict, the last one is the one this point is aiming everyone to do that one. Assertive means communicating your needs, wants, feelings, beliefs and opinions to others in a direct and honest manner, while at the same time being receptive to their needs and without intentionally hurting anyone’s feelings. We should all learn to treat people like this, because it will change our life for good!

Having supportive relationships is key!
·      Having supportive relationships- Choose wisely with whom to hang out. Choose in relation to how they treat you and if you feel identified with that group. Pick friends that support you and are next to you through thick and thin and are good people from the inside. When you have people next to you that support you and that you can trust in, you feel like the world to you is full of great people. For this avoid bullies and pick people that you like. It is better to have people that are not as popular but you trust in, that having a popular group in which you don’t belong to and everyone there mistreats you.

Specialist
Felix’s ideas he transmitted to me were that for a teenager it is very hard to set what things are good and bad. It is hard even for every human being. Thankfully, people have the right to choose things in our life, and in that capacity to pick we can choose different vital paths. The decisions that we take during these years are strongly influenced by two factors: the atmosphere and the society in which we live in (ex: the dominant culture, the laws, political and socio economic context, etc.) and the desires and views from our parents.
Young people try, from nature; to untie themselves from those knots and generate a new path, often opposite to the one lived. As he says, every revolution emerges with the idea to alter something, and to build something else; whose are often teen’s ideas to society. In this frame, a teen’s social life goes in between two or more limits: 1) the search for identification of people of the same generation, a search guided by personal motivations, by ideals, to search differentiation and independence from the established society (a elder’s world). 2) A slow strengthening of society bonds with institutions and to legitimate (following the rules) groups. It is like that that at a first teen instance, they will free up and join new groups or cliques such as rock bands, and other ones with common purposes, to feel connected with some people. The second and third instance is about teens or young adults going back to their original social structure and under society, such as family, school, work, university, political and religious views, etc.
In this journey, each teen will define their paths; build character, personality, and the relationships with others. In some cases they are more sociable characters, extroverted, open, etc. and in others it is more introverted, closed and more to themselves. It isn’t that one is better than the other, they are just different. Also, each teenager will learn the laws and ways to live in life and how to behave in societies (called socialization process) such as recognizing conduct rules and especially, their right and citizen duties. This last point is the one that give special social importance to the topic of social health among teenagers. From his point of view, he thinks it isn’t very important the friendly attitudes one adopts, but the fundamental part to the developing in society is the type of citizen formation one acquires. It is called citizen formation, in this case, to the knowledge and conscience that the person acquires over one’s social role and about the possibilities that society will grant one to develop and grow as a person.
Humans are what can be called “gregarious animals”. We like living in groups and societies with each other. Maybe we need it since it is part of our DNA (anthropological way of they human being). It is therefore that we must take this point into consideration, and open our teen relationships completely, be open to what comes, being as flexible as possible. The more relationships and the good quality we have with them will make us special individuals and will change the way we look at life, since so many more points of view will be shown from each individual.

Environmental health

The environment is described as the living and non-living things in the world, such as water, plants, air, and animals. This component is all about keeping the air and water clean, having safe food and having an enjoyable land. It is also about the impact of our surroundings on our health, which is due to the complex interactions between human genetics. They will be explained in depth below:

Water´s running out, save it!
·      Keeping clean air and water, safe food, and an enjoyable land - Unfortunately, this is a component that for the majority isn’t decided by us, since it depends on the place we live, the socio- economic status of our parents, etc. Regardless of this, it is something we must to know how to do and apply it to have a clean environment. The world environment here doesn’t only mean nature, but it is the quality of living from people. Going back to this point, in this increasing world, a lot of resources are needed to sustain humans with energy and give them a good life. Those resources are the basic ones such as air, water, food, land, and unfortunately it is something finite that will run out in the future. Many people will suggest that at this rate of population increase (7 billion already!) there will be wars for the basic physiological need, water and food, and even later for air! That simply sounds crazy cause all we have to do for the majority is turn the tap on, but if we waste all the resource at this rate (look at link with map for future reference), they will ran out in less than we think of. To conclude, we all like having a great life, enjoying every moment at the fullest. Help others, do community service, don’t take long showers, close the tap while brushing your teeth and doing the dishes, plant trees and food etc. and these sort of things that mixed at a global scale will make a huge difference. It is our planet and the life of everyone, so think of the person next to you that doesn’t have as much before doing something for you.
·      Our surroundings affects our health- the way we treat the environment will have a big impact on our health, and most probably the age until we will live. If we prevent from trees getting chopped down for example, there will be more oxygen in the air, and it will also prevent global warming, which will increase our quality of life. This is because of the complex interactions between human genetics and our surroundings.
·      Recycling paper, glass, food to protect area- We all probably had a lesson on recycling and how it is very important, but how is it though? Well your teachers were probably right it is fundamental to ensure a green and good quality life. By recycling paper, fewer trees are first being chopped down, which gives more oxygen and produces less global warming. Secondly, it will save money for businesses that involve cutting trees and doing the whole process, it is much simpler now. And finally is a renewable energy that could be used from garbage, bio energy. As seen, the benefits are greatly and it all comes down to a cause, to protect the environment! We have seen since the 20th century a climate change going on, and recycling is all about saving resources and protecting the environment, trying to leave it as intact as possible. Earth has trees and nature for a reason, and we must learn not to alternate it. Recycling varies in many countries; like in Switzerland is something mandatory to do, which in my opinion is very efficient and works well. If in your area not many people do it, take some initiative, set the example and encourage your neighbors and friends to do it.
4 magic R´s. Reuse, reduce, recycle, restore.
If we follow all the things necessary for this component, it will assure us a much better life in terms of quality, and future generations will also benefit from having a clean environment, even though our world is going through big changes, population being one of them. Take conscious and think about others apart from you.

Spiritual Health

This component is about finding inner wellness, and feeling like there’s a purpose in life we must follow, and that’s why we were born. This might be related to whatever religion you believe in, and it might mean different things for different people.

Practicing yoga or meditating will do one good!
·      Maintaining harmonious relationships with other living things- this component is about harmony and peace, and this specific point is maintaining that with humans, animals, and other living things. This point can be part of social health as well, and it is very important. Learning to treat people with love and respect, no matter how they treat you. This is related to religion, and that nobody should be hated and treated with disrespect. A common catholic phrase says, “If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also”. This phrase is very common, and it is hard to find now days a teenager who does this. I mean, it is common that if someone hits you to react, but the message this is sending is not to hit him back, either turn away or solve the problem with words.
·      Living according to one’s ethics, morals and values- We were all taught by our parents to be respectful, polite, and mostly thankful, and this depends on the culture. This point is about to living according to the principles one was taught, always applying respect, love and treating the person like the most special person.

This component isn’t as long as the others, since it is something more personal than rather a list of things one must do. To recap, it is all according to one’s thoughts, religion and about how one thinks it’s the best way to live. This could be living in harmony with the environment or in peace with yourself and the ones around.

Conclusion

Like building a house, every individual must learn and get the skills to build a happy life. Enjoy life!
To finish this post and all the six components that make up health, I would like to say that health is thankfully a matter that we can control, and it should be use with wisdom in every occasion. Health related issues will appear in many situations, more as you become older (and if you’re a party freak), and one must learn to reject things and not think of “what would they think if I do this”. It’s not only with alcohol matters, but also about how you treat others, your actions to the environment, how you appreciate yourself and others, and finding a meaning in life. Every individual must learn to build their own life according to their values and cultures, and taking into consideration all the components, that will lead to the healthiest life of all . All of these points make up a component (physical, emotional, mental, etc.) that forms the term health. With this last point and concluding paragraph I finish here saying to take care of you, I hopefully informed you transmitted to you the knowledge necessary to carry on a great life, but it is all up to you to change it. Enjoy life people, live responsibly, make a better world…

Mental and Emotional health post

Introduction

“Robert, time for dinner sweetie!” called mom. “No mom, I’m on the computer right now, would you please leave me alone!!!” shouted Robert. How many hundreds of times have we mistreated somebody, over reacted, gotten mad, depressed, etc. for very silly things that could have been explained without the need of shouting, getting angry and tensioning the situation? For common teenagers, this happens many times, and even though we don’t see the negative side of it, it does harm our body. We, as teens, are growing, we are facing changes like being more independent, dating, getting ready for a career, getting mature friends etc. and there can be many feelings one can go through at this time period. The most common are over anxiety, depression and stress and if those are taken to the limit they can have negative effects on our body, and they will be further explained.
Our mind and our body are like two faces of the same coin; they are interconnected in every single way. Our face, our posture and everything shown through our body is a reflection of our mind or our “soul”, explains Dr Lorusso, a psychoanalyst graduated from the Luis Chiozza University in Argentina, who has helped me develop the main points of this post.
At the end of the post, you will hopefully think about how you treat yourself, your peers, and change your daily habits to become a healthier person in the mental and emotional health component.

Mental health common mistakes, overcoming them and some tips:

It is true!
·      Having low self- esteem- Self-esteem is a measure of how much you value, respect and feel confident about yourself. If one has a low one, it can have many impacts one oneself like feeling insecure, vulnerable to peer pressure, feeling depressed, especially on the decisions one makes towards health (consuming drugs, alcohol, smoking, etc). Also, it can lead to harm one’s mental health, and then lead to depression and suicide. Many of us don’t like several things we have, maybe our nose, our teeth, our hair, or anything, but we have to accept ourselves and think that we are special the way we are. No one can alter that, so why make a huge deal about it. The best thing we can do about it is accept it, that single attitude will bring unlimited amounts of benefits such as increased respect, increased ability to reach goals, ability to try new things and don’t get affected by it, an increased feeling of value and it will show others that we feel good about ourselves, and therefore to others as well. You can tell if someone has low self-esteem by just looking at him or her, her posture, if he/she is looking to the front or downwards, etc. To improve one’s self- esteem there are many things one can do like using positive self- talk such as “ I can do it” or even “ I am awesome, nobody can tell me what I can or can’t do”. It may look arrogant, but it is only to you, and trusts me, it works! One can also choose supportive friends and act with integrity, being honest and having strong principles. Other tips are mentioned below in the chart. This is a hard to master at first, but once you start getting used to it, such as liking yourself, your looks, your voice, etc. and when you don’t even think about it anymore, you will start seeing your life with joy, looking at the positive side of it, and you will certainly get advantaged.
Follow the tips!

·      We don’t want to try new things- One good sign of mental health is being able to try new things. We should not be afraid of failing, ridicule ourselves in front of everybody or simply making mistakes, we are humans and everyone does it. I know that we all want to be really popular and get the prettiest girls/ boys in the grade, but its fine we don’t get it right all the time. I dare you to try it out, get involved in a new sport you’ve never tried, and have a good time with it, don’t get frustrated if you fail, laugh and go on. We are not all an ace at everything in this world, some of us are good at some things and others that we have a weak point and maybe should be worked on, but we can work hard and try to develop those skills needed for each thing. For example, Messi is for many the best football player in the world right now, but he probably isn’t so good at basketball or at business, science, you name it. This is something Dr. Lorusso told me, as an advice, we can’t all be perfect at everything, but we can develop flairs, and potentials to be developed. What I’m basically saying is that life happens only once, don’t stick to what you’ve always done, try new stuff and have a blast at it, go and do that what is challenging you, go and talk to the girl you like, don’t feel ashamed if you fail, it will make us build the attitude to reach vitality and a great life.

·      Getting seriously affected by stress- “I have a big project due tomorrow.  I have been leaving it for the final day and been on Facebook the rest of the time. It’s 9 p.m. and I haven’t started it yet.  I want to kill myself, I have headaches, I cant concentrate and everything is going wrong right now, the stress is killing me and I’m not going to finish!” I bet many of us have experienced those moments, especially when we procrastinate or leave everything for the last minute and hope that we will finish it magically. It is not going to happen! We must organize our time, plan before hand and prepare everything so we can handle stress and it doesn’t affect our daily lives.  Stress is described as the state of mental or emotional tension in response to a demanding circumstance. Everything that causes stress is called a stressor, and it can range from being going out on a date with someone or simply by watching a football match.
Don´t let this happen to you!

There are different number of stressors that can affect our daily lives, such as environmental stressors (pollution, poverty, noise, natural disaster, etc), biological stressor (illnesses, disabilities, injuries), thinking stressor (taking an exam, doing something that involves thinking), behavioral stressors (not getting enough sleep, exercise, consuming tobacco, drugs, alcohol, or simply by not managing time properly) and lastly life change stressor (any major life change, either positive or negative, like the death of a beloved person, going through your parents divorce). In a situation where the body reacts to a stressful situation, the energy, reflexes and strength needed to cope with the stressor is called the fight-or-flight response.

Fight or flight response!

At this point, the body releases epinephrine, or adrenaline, one of the hormones released in a moment of stress, that alters many things, such as the breathing speed (increases) to help get more oxygen throughout the body and the beating of the heart faster, which increases the flood of blood to the body to carry more oxygen. Leaving apart the theoretical part, long term- stress can cause diseases such as tensing up of the muscles in the neck and head, headaches, heart attacks, and weakening up the immune system, which makes us combat the daily infections (like flu). The advice here in order to avoid suffering from long term stress is taking care of oneself. We will face hundreds of stressful situations from now on, hopefully they are small and don’t influence our daily lives. Things one can do to defend from stress are things such as exercising regularly, getting enough rest, eating balanced (physical health!). Also, if you think it is severely affecting you, tell your parents, friends, relatives, etc. you trust to help you overcome this, it will be the best way to overcome this!

Emotional health common mistakes, overcoming them and some tips:

·      Expressing emotions in a negative, aggressive and destructive way: We tend to treat people bad, over exaggerate, scream, yell, anything you want to call it, but we are generally bad at transmitting calm and relaxed messages to other people. When our mom asks us something, the impulse of screaming always crosses our mind, but we must learn to avoid it and respond in a soft and assertive way, it won’t only help us to become more pacific people, but others will look at us with respect as well. Some recommendations are to practice talking calmly with someone in your trust group; carry out some exercises that involve talking assertively to each other in a direct, respectful way.

Three communication styles, aim for the assertive one!

·      Not asking for help when sad or coping with unpleasant emotions- As mentioned, teens aren’t generally known as the most talkative group of all. To be honest, it can be really hard to express our emotions in difficult situations, and by doing this; we aren’t allowing other people help us to become a better person. By talking, everything gets clarified and one can grow, listening to other people’s opinion about what we are good at and what we can work on. A possible solution for this could be to talk to our parents (yes, we have to do it!) and they will know if we need the help psychologist or any other specialist. Trust me, it is the best solution, but again, as a teen it can be really hard to make the decision of going to a person and deeply talking about one’s difficulties, since we prefer to stay on our borders and avoid other individuals.
·      Trying to blame others for our actions- we often tend to blame others for our decisions and not take charge of our actions, says Dr Lorusso, who explains that if we take a decision about something (even to think about it) and it doesn’t turn out as one expected it or thought it would, it is entirely our responsibility. It is fundamental to develop self- esteem and become an independent person, since if not one will always think that to be successful one has to depend on other to solve his/her issues.
·      Trying to live without complaints, reproaches and blame- also suggested by Dr. Lorusso, one must live without complaints, reproaches or blame towards others and us. This attitude makes us live a life with discomfort makes us conflictive persons. To face this, there is a clear solution, that is only inside you and you can only change.

·      Depression and anxiety issues- Feeling sad from time to time can be something normal at this age. But when that turns into despair, loneliness and emptiness, that is called depression and that is what can be dangerous, since it is considered a mental illness. To treat this, it is recommended to check with your parents and doctor (sometimes the medicine one ingest could be the one causing it) . Fortunately, on many cases, one will control the thoughts and feelings and will be able to overcome this by your own.  To face this, one must avoid and withdraw your attention from the thoughts or the things that are bothering you and that is provoking you this. Think of that you feel really good about, maybe imagine a situation that you are the hero, the leader and that overall makes you feel like the best person in the world. As you leave apart the negative circumstances and refocus on the positive thoughts, you will feel better about yourself. Don’t let this affect you, stay strong and positive that you will get rid of this situation. Like the “Law of attraction” movie says, picture yourself being out of the situation you’re in right now, and imagine yourself being healthy again with the people you love, your family, boy/girl friend, friends. This will help a lot to come out of the current circumstance.  About the anxiety, it is a normal reaction to stress, when we don’t know how this is going to turn out. We may experience feelings of worry, nervousness and uneasy, and it is something normal we all experience in life when a big tests comes (called test anxiety), when a date comes, or any important event for one. But like depression, when we start feeling an excess amount of anxiety for unknown reasons (out of proportion with the present situation), happening too often and strong then that means that our anxiety levels are too high. We may experience being tense, distracted, preoccupied and always alert, affecting our lives. It is actually considered a very common disorder, and it should be treated as soon as possible to stop it from evolving into something worse. There are many ways to treat anxiety, going from medications (prescript by doctors), to cognitive behavioural therapies that will help identify the types of thoughts and beliefs that cause the anxiety and work to reduce them. There are also two other methods used, biofeedback which uses electronics to measure and monitor how the body responds to stress in order to overcome it, and relaxation techniques, which include yoga and tai chi activities.
Defense mechanisms. Important in real life!
An automatic and unconscious thought or behaviour that is used to avoid unpleasant emotions is called a defense mechanism. It isn't decided that it is good or bad, they sometimes occur at moments when we don´t feel that good, and we can´t control them. It is important to recognize them and become aware of how you react and treat others. To prevent from experiencing these two states of mind, having a healthy lifestyle (balanced eating, doing physical activities and resting) will contribute to one’s health in this area.

Conclusion:

Maslow´s hierarchy of needs.
Having good mental and emotional health have indescribable amounts of benefits. Mentally and emotionally healthy people are more likely to reach self- actualization. Self- actualization is the achievement of the best that a person can be. It was developed by Abraham Maslow, a psychologist, developed this theory that stated than in order to achieve self- actualization one would need to first achieve some basic needs. He listed each need in a pyramid which he named "Maslow´s Hierarchy of Needs" and that shows each stage in order to achieve self actualization. The first basic needs are ones such as water, food, sleep and exercise, moving to safety, shelter, and protection from danger. Unfortunately, we don´t all have this, and that´s why we need to work on making a better a better world following this theory.

Teens at some stages are very difficult beings to treat. It is hard even to talk to our relatives about specific things of my life that are good or that concern us, such as school, friend, social life, etc. I understand that sometimes it can be really hard to follow the series of advices mentioned, but we must do it for our own benefit. I don’t want to sound like an old grumpy old man trying to explain teens of my old age to strictly follow every single thing here or you will be doomed to death. No, my point here is to make you change your attitude of how you see health according to the different components. My goal is to make you think on these issues and maybe help you to switch to a healthier life, maybe applying one new advice each week. Changes happen step by step, because realistically switching from a lousy, sedentary, aggressive lifestyles to the healthiest teen of all in one day will be impossible and I’m sure none of you are looking for this.
Going back to the mental and emotional health topic and to wrap up this, I want to make it clear how important it is on our lives, and the big impact it has on us and on other people around us. When we have self- esteem, or when we treat people calmly and assertivelylife itself has a meaning, we feel like we belong to the world and that life is the best. Take some time and try to apply this things to your life, you will live a more pleasant life without resentment, rage and anger or loneliness, unhappiness and despair.

·       Trying to imitate others to build a specific personality- The last point of this post will be about our personality, many of us are very outgoing, others may be a little more shy, but we all have something special in the inside that makes us the best person in the world. I can be very shy in many circumstances, as a child especially, when I didn’t speak and just went with the flow, but that doesn’t restrain me from enjoying life, making friends, etc. Another comment Dr. Larusso told me was that there isn’t a specific personality that is the best, that if by nature you are outgoing, can speak in front of many people, etc. it doesn’t mean you will succeed in life 100%, while other shy people with miserably fail. No, it simply isn’t that way and we, as teenagers who are in a developing age, must build character, that normal personality that makes us the way we are and that we enjoy. By being comfortable and confident about one is what will bring us interior happiness and therefore success in life.

Physical Health Post

Introduction

Eating healthy and doing the amount of exercise regularly has always been a world concern. Everybody has once gone to the doctor and been said “You have to change your eating and exercise habits and start having a healthy lifestyle” And we may ask ourselves: “what does the word healthy really mean here?! Is it eating a lot of fruits and vegetables all the time and not eating any fats and sugar and exercising all the time?” For those people who are struggling with this issue and really want to achieve a healthy life and live in the physical terms (diet, exercising, resting), you’re on the correct page.

What is the scientific reason for why we eat?

First of all, we eat for various reasons; we are in the street walking from our after school activity, when our stomach starts mumbling “I need food, please give me food”, we may also experience low energy and bad breath. This is very common, humans are heterotrophs, we need energy to survive, food satisfies our hunger, appetite and provide with the necessary nutrients to our cells and parts of our body. Scientifically speaking, energy is produced by the splitting of a chemical bond in a substance called adenosine triphosphate (ATP), often referred to as the body´s "energy currency". It is produced in every cell of the body from the breakdown of carbohydrate, fat and protein- the three fuels that are transported and transformed by various biochemical processes (Sports Nutrition by Anita Bean). Any food may fill us up and “shut up” our stomach, but only healthy foods such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water will contribute to a healthy physical life. Remember that a physically healthy person is the one that has a body that works properly, all the organs, muscles, function for the health of the body, killing diseases, producing cells, etc. Every food we eat has calories, which is the fuel for our body that provide heat and energy for us to breath, eat, and do pretty much anything. Some have more and some less, that contributes to our final daily caloric amount, which depends on certain factors, like exercise done, weather, age, etc. The scientific definition of a calorie is the energy needed to raise the temperature by 1 degree Celsius. If you ever have doubts about calories and how many a food has, remember it is always in the can/pack. We should ingest approximately 2500- 3000 calories per day for boys from 14- 18 years old and 2200 calories per day for girls from 14- 18 years old. Even though caloric values are not extremely important in teen years since we are growing, developing good habits about what food to choose in terms of calories will lead you to having an appropriate weight in future years, when the caloric intake makes a difference.
Check the table to see how you´re doing!
The food advices in this pyramid can lead us to a healthy life

Does exercise really keep us healthy?

Sports and doing exercise can bring different number of benefits to our body; the main one is to build up a strong body and avoid many possible sicknesses, illnesses, diseases, that can occur in the future because of a sedentary lifestyle. Some of this is reducing risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cancer, diabetes, etc. The benefits are enormous, so one should prioritize playing soccer or basketball than staying to play PS3, Xbox, etc. Not only develops one person’s physical shape, but it also contributes to the social and intellectual side. As John Medina states in his book “Brain rules” men started doing physical activities since they inhabited the Earth. They didn’t do eat as a hobby and if they had time, like we do now, but they did it so survive, either hunting or running away from a tribe, etc. This physical habit has been done until contemporary times, and the human brain has evolved to adapt to doing exercise. According to Medina, exercise has been related to how intelligent a person is and can be, if somebody exercises regularly, that person shouldn’t have difficulties learning and apply knowledge and skills.
Benefits of exercise
It is your choice to start changing your lifestyle habits

As mentioned previously, one should adjust their eating habits according to the amount of exercise and sports one does, the amount of muscles being worked out, time of training, intensity, among other things. Sometimes it can be very hard for a teen to pick in between an apple or a bubble gum, or water and Coke, but one must learn to do it and these posts will have its goal to try to change your mind about it. I’m only transmitting information, it isn’t enough that you process it and know it all by heart, because the goal of this is to apply to daily life and the multiple instances in which we will have to make a decision.
Below this paragraph, I have put one of the most common mistakes we generally make in health matters. Nutritionist Silvia Conci and Internet sources have helped me to develop it, including extra tips on how to avoid them. If you want to collect them and apply them to your daily life, great, you will live a long and healthy life! It is all up to you, it is your body! A good diet, exercise, smart decisions and a lot of rest will lead to ones health and quality of life!
Get involved in after school activities, anyone can do it, it is worth it!

Common mistakes we do, tips to avoid them!

·      We only eat one type of macronutrient! Foods that give us energy are categorized into three macronutrients: Proteins, lipids (or fats) and carbohydrates. Teens use to eat only one, lets say proteins and leave the others apart . One should try to divide the daily calories the following way: 55% carbohydrates eating fruits, milk, vegetables, whole grains, beans, etc. all made up from one thing: sugars (single unit is called glucose). Then 30% of fats found in healthy foods like peanuts, avocadoes, in general oils like canola, peanut, sesame, nuts, etc. and 15% of proteins in foods like salmon, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, beans, sea food, soy, etc. It doesn’t need to strictly be this way, but one should try to follow this ideal percentage table.
·      We tend to avoid fruits and vegetables and go for fast food! A good amount of vitamins and minerals are indispensable for a good sporty life. About this, one can follow the “5 rations of fruits and vegetables” a day statement, it will be of good utility because it will give appropriate quantity vitamins and minerals to regulate the energetic processes and other micronutrients such as fiber (can´t be digested but contributes in the digestive process by "cleaning" and stimulating our intestines) , antioxidants (prevents oxidation removing potentially damaging oxidizing agents) and other phytonutrients (substance from plant origin which has nutritional value) which are vital for health, immunity and optimum living.  Don’t go under 3 rations of food and vegetables a day, and eat vegetables of every type and colour in a meal.
Diets full of vegetables and fruits are great!

·      Avoiding fats to not gain weight! Fats are one of the three macronutrients that provide with energy and that are necessary for survival. It is a long-term energy storage place, and everyone should eat unsaturated fat ones, the ones that benefit you. When someone is on a diet, essential fatty acids are missed out, necessary to live a healthy life. Some good sources of fatty acids that won´t make one “fatter” and build up are spoons of oil, sunflower, nuts, seeds, olive oil, oily fish and corn.
·      Eating pasta for every meal before a competition! Pasta is tasty and it is often eating by sports man. It is very good to eat pasta 2 or 3 weeks a day, but not all the time. There are also other cereals like rice, corn, oat, barley, rye, etc to pick from that give us quick and instant energy and can also include vitamins and minerals.

·      Skipping meals! We tend to skip meals, either because we wake up too late, or because we had a lot of homework, we had to study, or whatever. Every meal is extremely important, because that is where the energy to face the whole day, thinking, playing sports and doing our normal life. Breakfast is the most important one and shouldn’t be missed at all costs, since remember that we haven't given the organism food for 10-12 hours (since dinner). It must be a complete breakfast in order to have a positive performance on school and after school activities and not to have glucose deficits (and faint). Another problem is that we may often not be hungry in the morning. For his, it is recommended to wake up with anticipation and dedicate the first few minutes to personal hygiene and cleaning of our personal space, since that will generate hunger. Every person that eats a good and balanced breakfast will increase its nutritional state and improve its performance. If you follow this advice and have and complete meals, you’re going to achieve better grades in school and in other activities!
Diary rations and frequency of consumption of recommended foods! Take into consideration!

  •     Mineral and vitamin deficits- they are produced as the consequence of an unbalanced diet or restrictive diets (monotonous or unbalanced) that don’t include the basic nutrients. The minerals that have great importance through the teen stage is calcium, iron and zinc that are related to a concrete aspect of the growing stage. Calcium: it is related to the growing of the osseous mass (growing of the bones) and the foods that have a high content are milk and all of its derivatives (the vitamin D, lactose and the proteins make the absorption more efficient), dry fruits, and derivatives of soy. Iron- It is a component of hemoglobin (transports oxygen) that is necessary for the development of what blood is made up of (red blood cells) that helps in the process to obtain energy. The nutrients that are best absorbed are from animal origins, such as meat, fish, eggs and derivatives of these foods, but vegetable origin aren’t digested as good (with the exception if vegetables are mixed with foods rich in vitamin C, citric acids or with food from animal origin rich in complete proteins like ham or lentils). Zinc- Is involved in the synthesis (combination) of proteins, and therefore in the formation of body tissues. It also contributes to the process of obtaining energy, in the immune system and has an antioxidant roll. The lack of zinc in the body may cause injuries on the skin, delay in the cicatrization of tissue, hair loss, nail fragility, changes in taste and smell, etc. The main sources of zinc are meats, fishes, seafood, and eggs, and also cereals, dry fruits and legumes have as well. The vitamins necessary in this stage are the ones related with the synthesis of proteins, growth and development. These are water-soluble vitamins A and D (found in dairy products, butter, egg yolk, and viscera), vitamins of the group B: folic acid found in legumes, green vegetables, fruits, breakfast cereals. Other vitamins are B12 found in meat, egg, fish, dairy products and soy and B6 in integrated cereals, liver, dry fruits, etc.

    ·      Ingesting medication by oneself and supplements use! Ingesting medication by oneself without medical subscription can be very common, and this is something really dangerous, since it will give excess amounts of supplements and hormones, which can cause severe damages and even death. About the use of supplements (vitamins, minerals, proteins), it is not very recommended, unless high intensity training, since an adequate diet is more than enough to obtain the nutrients necessary that the body needs. Why pay for a pill when one can get a fruit salad.
    ·      We need water! With training and physical activities, a lot of sweat is released, and the necessities grow, even more on hotter days. It is suggested to drink 7-8 glasses, and depending on the energetic necessities (example 2500 Kcal, 2.5 litters of water). It does not only hydrate us but it will carry waste products as well. It is way more preferable to drink water rather than sodas. Always take water to practices!

    ·      We eat too many fast food and precooked food! Its fine having a burger once in a while with your friends, it won’t harm you forever. The issue comes when this “often” becomes something regularly and turns into an always. Make wise decisions and pick something healthier with not so much salt, sugar, saturated fat, etc. It is better to waste more money on something healthier and live a longer life in the future. Don’t get tricked by their prize, the prize means the quality of how good it is for your body!
    ·      We sleep too little! We have reached a point where we have many projects, quizzes, tests, etc due the next day and we often stay until 11, 12, 1, 2, and in extreme cases most of the night studying or finishing work. The key here is organization: instead of procrastinating (something very common everyone does once in a while) and going on Facebook until 8, time could have been used wiser and been studying or finishing the work there, so at night one gets good sleep (8- 12 would be the ideal). In my case for example, I go to sleep at 10:30 and sometimes earlier when I don’t have much homework, and if I need something to modify, I wake up very early (determination is very necessary) and finish it there, my brain works better at morning that at night when I’m all tired. Advice: restrict yourself and organize the precious factor of time.

Effects of tobacco on a teen´s body
    ·      Consuming alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs to think one is “cool”: This is a major problem around our age. First, I will start with the worst ones and the most addictive ones: tobacco and drugs. These are the addictive ones and that must be avoided to be healthy, they are really addictive (drugs like marihuana, cocaine, etc) and once you start it is really hard to stop, especially if you start young. People start for reasons like to forget problems (self- esteem problems and not feeling confident about oneself) and to be "cool" something that has clearly evolved and now days being cool is not smoking. Don´t fall in the trap, nicotine is seriously addictive and once you start it is very hard to quit. From every one I have talked to that smoked cigarettes, they all regret the moment when they smoked their first one. For this 2 I will give you a pretty straightforward advice: never start if you want to be healthy and live a long life without having a huge chance of getting diseases. Peer pressure can play a great role in this, like you’re friends making you do this or that. It doesn’t matter if you look like a chicken, or whatever they might call you, don’t accept it. About drinking, the bad things are the effects that it has, making you the most invincible guy that can jump from trees or cross the street when the light is green, etc. It is very hard to say to a teen not to drink, especially when one becomes older, but the bad things occur when you binge drink in little periods of tine (girls specially) and the effects that has, like getting crashed by a car, getting injured, and even to death. When you are still developing and are growing, the recommendation is not to drink, I know there are plenty of people around pretending to be "cool" by smoking, drinking, etc., learn to avoid these kind of people and hang out with the smart ones that make the right choice. Trust me, make the right decisions, don´t go with what your "cool mate" says, simply don´t do it, you will live a better live without knowing you did something bad for your body. The consequences are many, short term and long term effects. For our time period the short term one are physical problems (hang over, illnesses, unwanted or unprotected sex, etc.) and legal problems (drinking underage, or hurting someone while drunk and the long term effects are school problems (reflected on our grades), and social problems (fighting and lack of participation in youth activities).  The advice here is being responsible and taking care of what one´s action, it is all up to you, not anyone else.

    Why do teens try it?

    1.     Family and friends- If any of our family members or friends smoke or drink daily, we get the impression that it is normal and therefore one should try it. Being around smokers greatly increase the change you will try it.
    2.     Misconceptions- Messages about the health dangers of alcohol and tobacco are often not believed. We may look at people who have smoked/ drunk for years and seem to be perfectly fine, but unfortunately the effects of it might not be visible. It takes a while till they finally find the effect it has had on one.
    3.     Advertising- Advertisement has been very successful in the past, using cowboys, attractive models and cartoons. The idea they are sending is that by smoking/ drinking one will be like that, handsome and attractive, and that it is cool to do it, but it is not!
    4.     Curiosity- Some people might try it because they are curious. They might see people around them that tries it and it makes them happy and relaxed, and they wonder how it feels like.
    5.     Rebellion- Every adults tell you that one shouldn't try it. Sometimes teens get tired of following rules and orders and go against every thing our parents told us. Using tobacco and excessively drinking can be a way to rebel against authority. One tries to be independent, but one certainly doesn't become independent by becoming addicted to them.
    6.     Peer pressure- Our peers will generally try to make us try it, that it will be "fine" and that you will feel great. Again, say no and don´t fall on the trap. They are already addicted to it and they are trying to get others to become it as well. Explain him assertively your situation and reject it. It will be the best decision you will have made.
    7. Path of addiction.. don´t let this happen to you!

    Alcohol can kill, have precaution!

    Belief vs reality

Overweight problems are still very common around the age; every food related decision we choose now will complement to our weight in the future. It is true there are several factors that affect obesity and overweight such as genetic, behaviour, metabolism, environment, race, socio economic status and culture, but food is in my opinion the biggest one, and healthy decisions can overtake the other factors. Below, some tips for overcoming nutritional over weight and underweight problems

Are you overweight? Don’t worry; there is still time to reverse it!

    ·      Serve your own food! For meals like lunch or dinner, one should serve its won food in relation to how hungry one is to avoid eating excess food and increase weight.
    ·      Eat until you are full! Many of us were probably taught to eat everything that was served in our plate no matter what. Now days, that mentality has changed completely and health classes are teaching student to finish eating once one is full. This full feeling is called satiety. A possible thing one could try out and testing if your full of not and by not looking at the plate is by eating blindfolded.
    ·      Preplanning and goal setting: Many of the food related things, like what we have for lunch or dinner is all up to our parents. We should also intervene and have our own thoughts about the food we eat, like “Hey mom for today I would like lasagna, or rice with fish, etc” to not eat the same things twice on a day and also to eat in a healthily way. By also putting dates and goals like reducing some weight (if overweight) or if underweight diets to gain some weight.
    Caloric value in each food

    ·      Exercising frequently! Exercising 2 to 3 times a week will help burn excess calories and get you in good shape!
Just as a reminder, these suggestions should be taken in a light way, if one is overweight, one should set goals to try to be in an ideal weight. This isn’t about being the skinniest of all, no, is about standing in the correct position BMI (Body Mass Index) wise. You may think looking in the mirror might be the easiest way to tell if one is overweight, but the BMI is the best way. To calculate it, divide your weight (in kg) by the square of your height (in m). Ex: If I´m 60 kg and my height is 1.7 m, I must do the following: 60/ 1.7* 1.7= 21. According to the list I would be "normal weight" which is the one we are aiming for.

What are the limitations of the BMI?
The BMI does not give information about body composition, such as how much weight is fat and how much lean (thin) tissue. It simply gives the desirable weight of average people, not sports people! When you stand on a scale, it weighs everything- bone, muscle, water and fat. Therefore, you don´t know how fat you actually are. For competitive sports man, this classification isn't trustworthy, but for most people, it serves its purpose.

    Think before you act!

Are you underweight? There is time to modify it as well!

This isn’t a major problem for many people as well, especially in poorer countries in Africa, for example. It is something that occurs to both man and woman, I would say more to women in richer countries, who can be obsessed with being really skinny (the definition of beauty isn’t measured by how thin one is!).  The two major food disorders that have caused many deaths are bulimia and anorexia nervosa. It isn’t a topic directly related to food; it has also some mental problems that are why it is categorized under mental illness. Bulimia is caused when somebody binge eats a lot in a short amount of time and tries to get rid of the calories by vomiting it. Anorexia, on the other hand, is caused when someone is obsessed about a certain weight, and goes on diets to try to be skinnier, even when some are still really skinny. It occurs most often in girls, when they look themselves in the mirror and see a fat and corpulent body, when they really aren’t.
Being underweight in poor countries, or malnourished, can be a very hard thing to reverse. Sometimes, we unfortunately cant all take part on our physical health, because the world isn’t all rich. Some teens don’t have a choice but eat what there is; there isn’t a real choice to pick from. We must take care of the food, I know this isn’t geography class, but we must take advantage of it wisely, eating only the healthy food, since not everyone is as lucky as us unfortunately.  If you are on a diet, just think of the people that are dying every day, and then make a better choice. Being underweight means being below the healthy weight for your age and height, as shown in the table below. There are varied reasons for why one can be underweight, such as where one lives, the accessibility of food, socio economic class, and genetics. Sometimes it is uncontrollable and we can’t change it, like the million of children in Africa, but fortunately for many other teens it is controllable. It can lead to many diseases, cancer and tuberculosis, and even to death in certain instances when organs don’t get enough nutrients and the body can’t function.

    Real life example:
I have a neighbour who is 94 years old, and each morning wakes up with strong determination and strength to water the flowers and sweep the floor. It is something astonishing that just catches my attention every morning while I am having breakfast and across the window he is doing some sort of house duty, something even I am sometimes lazy to do. He is realistically 94, but he has a body of a 70 years old person, which is the reason: a healthy lifestyle. I am not 100% sure what he did to maintain that perfect shape, but I’m pretty sure he was involved in many physical activities and ate a well- balanced diet. As you will see in the following posts about environmental health, the air, the water and everything related to the environment has a huge impact also on our health. Switzerland is one of the countries with the longest life expectancy, which is another factor that explains the state he is in right now.
My lifetime goal and for every teen who is reading this, is to finish the last stage of life (I hope not soon and in many, many years!) like my neighbour Albert did, happy, always smiling, and enthusiastic with 94 years old but many less from the outside.
    My neighbor Albert!

    Conclusion
To conclude this post, I would like to encourage everyone, to maintain a physically healthy life. Remember that it doesn’t only mean not being sick or having tremendous muscles, its how your body works and responds, and to build that one must eat a healthy diet including food from all the foods mentioned above (carbs, unsaturated fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals), going for fruits and vegetables and doing a lot of sports! Again, I remind you that its your life, not mine. I want everyone to be healthy people, enjoy the best of life with family friends, etc, you are the only one that can decide! The sooner we get the habit, the easier and better it’s going to be!
